Westminster Catawba fell 23-13 to Wake Christian Academy on a rain-soaked Friday night at Tomahawk Stadium.

The already thin Westminster bench took a hit this week as six players were held out for academic probation, but the reshuffled game plan seemed early on as if it would propel the Indians to their first win of the season.

Especially when sophomore quarterback Hayden Black connected with Josh Parker for a 58-yard touchdown pass with 1:06 left in the first to take the lead, 6-0.

Wake Christian (2-4) countered quickly, scoring on its first possession of the second quarter. Sean Willingham punched in a 1-yard score and Chris Pittman converted the two-point attempt to move the Bulldogs ahead, 8-6.

The Bulldogs would add another score just before halftime after Barham Lane scored from 10 yards out on a reverse. Lane added his second score on the same play with 8:28 remaining to give his team the 21-6 edge.

The never-quit Parker, a 5-10 sophomore, powered the undersized Indians throughout the game with a strong all-around performance, and came up big on the Indians ensuing possession. Parker took the handoff from Black and danced left and scurried down the sideline for a 36-yard touchdown run. He then converted the PAT to pull the Indians to within one score.

Parker wasn’t done, though. He recovered the onside kick seconds later to give his team a chance at a potential game-tying scoring drive. Unfortunately, the offense sputtered and gave the ball to the Bulldogs after failing to convert a first down.

“(Josh) was definitely our player of the game today,” said first year Westminster Catawba coach Ben McGarity. “He played hard for us on offense, defense and special teams. Josh had a great game and is going to be a good football player around here for two more years.”

The Indians remain winless on the season, but McGarity likes the week-to-week improvements he sees the team make. The 13 points scored are a season-high for Westminster Catawba.

“This (game) is a tough lesson, but these guys are going to be battle-tested for this,” McGarity said. “This will pay dividends when these sophomores are seniors. I told them to bottle up this feeling and keep fighting.”
