The losing streak is over for the Westminster Catawba Indians as they beat Northside Christian 21-14.

Northside could only watch as the Indians capitalized on the Knights’ 15 penalties and four turnovers.

Westminster’s first drive went three-and-out, but Will Pickel’s punt bounced off an unsuspecting Northside player and was recovered by the Indians, setting up the Indians on Northside’s 35-yard line. The Indians drove down to the 6, where running back Broderick Moore punched it up the middle for a touchdown.

After another Northside fumble, Westminster Catawba looked to score again, but after a dropped snap, the Knights began their march.

To start the second quarter, Northside drove the ball 50 yards down the field to set up a 17-yard touchdown scramble by quarterback Josh Byrum. Northside took the lead with a 2-point conversion as Byrum connected with Bobby Siegworth.

The Indians were not done. With the help of good blocking, running back Josh Parker busted a 73-yard run to the end zone with five minutes left in the half to put the Indians ahead, 14-8.

Northside drew blood in the second half with a 14-yard run from Grant Rutledge only four minutes into the third quarter. The 2-point conversion was no good, tying the score at 14-14.

After defensive stands from both teams throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter, Moore scored the winning touchdown after breaking two tackles early and running down the sideline for 45 yards.

Students stormed the field as the Indians got their first win of the season.

After the win, Westminster Catawba coach Ben McGarity said he’s looking for wins to come in bundles.
