Stick Around: And they’re off ... Carolina Cup runs Saturday in Camden

It’s steeplechase and tailgate time once again in the Carolinas.

The annual Carolina Cup steeplechase horse race — an annual rite of spring in South Carolina since 1930 — takes place Saturday at Springdale Race Course near Camden.

The race will feature the best of American steeplechase horse racing, including national champions. It’s the first stop, and the largest race, on a tour of 40 steeplachase horse races held in 12 states during the season, March to November.

Thoroughbred horses from South Carolina and across the Southeast participate by racing around the track and completing jumps. Winners vie for $137,000 in total purse money and the event attracts a slew of national media coverage.

But that’s not the only attraction. It’s also a fashion show of sorts for many of the spectators, who come attired in fancy hats and bright spring colors to enjoy the social gathering.

Many spectators, especially those in the reserved section, lay out an elaborate spread of gourmet refreshments to accompany the day’s festivities — complete with candelabras, crystal glasses, flowers and tablecloths.

But more informal attire and fare — Kentucky Fried Chicken, casual picnics, hot dogs and the like — can be found among families and college students on the grounds.

The event, which attracts some 70,000 spectators, many whom travel more than 50 miles to attend, remains one of the state’s largest social and sporting events.

The inaugural race was held on March 22, 1930. The Carolina Cup has been run each consecutive year since, except for two years during World War II — 1943 and 1945.

The event’s popularity boomed during the 1950s, when its attendance grew to some 20,000 spectators. And in the 1970s, the first grandstand was built.

Seven races will be held, each about 35 minutes apart. The first race begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and the last begins at 5:35 p.m. Proceeds go to the Kershaw County Medical Center.
