Night sounds: Pull over for The Truckstop Preachers

Launch the first weekend of May with two chances for a musical meet and greet with The Truckstop Preachers. Tonight, mosey over for honky-tonk healing at The Long Branch Saloon, 761 Riverview Road, Rock Hill. You’ll believe in rock ‘n’ roll and a country twang with enough rockabilly bang to save your mortal soul.

The members are Nathan Palmer on lead vocals; Lee Goodwin on lead guitar and vocals; Glenn Jones on rhythm guitar and vocals; Jeff Faulkner on bass; and Mike Elder on drums.

Testify to their feisty edge and guitar grit, as well as the audacious dichotomy of Palmer’s bold baritone voice brandished alongside his cheeky demeanor on stage.

That their shows are unpredictable is a certainty. Knowing how the cool chaos might manifest itself is nigh onto impossible. Get show details at 366-5632.

There’s more Truckstop Preachers Saturday at the annual Midwood Maynia in the historic Plaza Midwood district of Charlotte. They’ll be playing from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., in the middle of a fun family event with several other bands. Get show times and lineup at plazamidwood.org/maynia. Singer-songwriter Matthew Alexander celebrates his new album, “Daredevil Angel” with a CD-release party Wednesday at The Visulite Theatre, Charlotte.

Poignant and prolific, Alexander is known for his unique finger-picking acoustic guitar style. Fifteen contemporary folk tracks are on the new CD, produced by Charlotte jazz legend Fred Story.

Alexander, who has been playing guitar since he was 8 and writing songs since he was 15, was part of the late ’60s folk music scene in Cambridge, Mass., and a regular performer at Boston coffeehouses. He was a founding member of the folk-trio Moonshine, opening for Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Billy Joel in the early ’70s. He has released three other albums, “Wishing I Had Wings” (1987), “April Heart” (1992) and “American Boy” (1999).

For the CD release, he will be backed by his band, The Matthew Alexander Band, which features Alexander on lead vocals, acoustic, rhythm and lead guitar; Ken Knight on bass; Robert Dulin on acoustic lead guitar; Mitchell Kearney on drums and percussion; and Richard Putnam on keyboards. No risk, just musical luck for Matthew Alexander, with the “Daredevil Angel” release party at The Visulite Theatre, 1615 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte. Look for a varied gathering of artists for tonight’s Songwriters Round at the Sylvia Theater in York. This month’s event features Charlotte songstress Marie Calabro and the Piedmont blues duo of Danny Wicker and Mel Jones. Herschel Lee Brown leads the festivities tonight starting at 9.
