Jive it up

“Java ‘n Jive” at Chandler Place Independent Retirement Living Community at 7 p.m. Friday. Seniors are invited to this free event to mingle, sample gourmet coffees and enjoy live music by John Leon Lewis. The facility is located at 745 Dilworth Lane, Rock Hill. For details, call 325-1008.

Bright and shiny

Enjoy hands-on science and family fun at the 31st annual Gaston Gem, Mineral and Faceters Club show and sale today through Sunday at the Gaston County Park, Dallas Cherryville Highway, Dallas, N.C. Event time is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event features and array of vendors, with mineral specimens from around the world, and events for all ages. The show and sale is a fundraiser for the Gaston Gem, Mineral and Faceters Club scholarship fund.

Hear the bands play

Enjoy a full day of area high school marching bands. The Rock Hill High School Band of Distinction and the Northwestern High School Purple Regiment Band will host the Olde English Festival of Bands Saturday at District Three Stadium, 211 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Gates open at 11 a.m. The competition includes 15 area bands competing for eight finalist spots. Rock Hill High will perform its exhibition show at 5:30 p.m. and Northwestern will perform its exhibition at 9:15 p.m. Admission is $8 adults and $6 students. Delight in the divas

Salute the great jazz divas of music history. Davis and Dow perform the works of Billie Holliday, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and more. Show time is at 8 p.m. Oct. 4 at Tillman Auditorium. Tickets are $5 to $7.

Celebrate Lando Day!

Follow the ‘Traces’

A fantastical blend of circus, physical theater and music. “Traces,” will be Oct. 7 through Nov. 28 at the McGlohon Theater, Charlotte. The show chronicles five characters attempting to live to the fullest what they believe could be their last moments. They tell their stories through music, song, dance, speech, illustration and acrobatics using skills such as tradtional Chinese acrobatics, basketball, skateboarding, classic piano, dance, humor and illustration. The performance is part of the Stanford Broadway Lights series. Tickets are $29.50 to $44.50 at blumenthalcenter.org or by calling (704) 372-1000.
