Fall is just the time for a stop by Just Fresh

The cool October weather puts me in a soup state of mind. When I'm looking for something quick, but still on the healthier side, I head to Just Fresh in RiverGate shopping center in Steele Creek. There, I can warm up with a tasty soup and get a filling sandwich, too.

Just Fresh, with the first of seven locations started in Charlotte,offers quick service serving sandwiches, burgers, salads and more. Along with signature tossed-to-order salads, Just Fresh offers wraps and sandwiches made with fresh-baked breads, soups, pizzas and a kid's menu. There also are cookies, and more than just fountain drinks, including smoothies, wine and beer (I saw Budweiser and Bud Light). A typical meal costs $6.29 and up. On Tuesdays, children eat free with the purchase of an adult meal.

The staff has always been helpful and friendly. The restaurant is bright with lots of natural light from the window walls, but still typically quiet and relaxing. After ordering at the counter and taking my number, I head to the fountain drinks. Just Fresh has that great crunchy ice.

It's a fine place for family with big booth and chair seating, as well as counter stools and even a few couches. I have my typical seat at a small table by the door, where I stare at the “Gobble it up! Turkey burger” sign as I take in the muted contemporary, yet cozy color and patterned scheme. I always forget about the burger, because I'm drawn in by the Half 'n' Half combo ($6.49) of soup and sandwich (or you can get a salad).

While I typically go for the roast beef and cheddar with cheddar and broccoli soup, I decided to venture out. The Caprese sandwich with chicken, fresh mozzarella and pesto on sour dough fit my fancy, with a cup of the seasonal soup — loaded potato.

It didn't take long for my meal to be served to my table. The soup was loaded with potatoes, bacon and cheese. The sandwich was fabulous packed with a not-too-overwhelming blast of pesto — very Italian seasonings and fresh, including the excellent bread. Definitely my new combo until I decide to venture out on the menu again, I'm sure.

Just Fresh also has a brunch menu, caters, serves party platters and boxed lunches, and of course, has take out.

When I'm looking for a quick bite without diet guilt that's satisfying and punched with flavor, I think Just Fresh.
