The yellow-brick corner building with the old-fashioned red-and-white sign for Tony's Ice Cream on Franklin Boulevard is a Gaston County, N.C., landmark, and rightfully so.

We were hungry. We saw the sign for D.J.'s Soul Food II kitchen, which recently opened on Herlong Avenue in Rock Hill, and we decided to step in for a look.

At the former McDonald's building on Liberty Street York is Perch's — home to seafood, chicken and barbecue. The made-over hamburger giant's building, now done in blue and white, has retained the front ordering counter, drive-thru window area and partially visible kitchen area.

We were looking for a quick and convenient lunch close to downtown Rock Hill, and a friend suggested we try Susie's Restaurant on Main Street.

Tucked in at Morris Field and Airport drives near Charlotte-Douglas International is Mr. G's. The small, tan-painted diner off-the-beaten path serves a plentiful menu of “chicken, seafood, burgers, hot dogs, salads, gyros, breakfast, etc.” with a helping of friendly service and side of speed.
