Forecasters say Hurricane Ida has strengthened to a Category 2 storm, and a hurricane watch was extended to the Florida Panhandle as Ida made its way across the Gulf of Mexico.

    • Take in a little night music with Ann Herlong

      Rock Hill pianist Ann Herlong will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Winthrop University's Barnes Recital Hall. The program will include compositions by Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, Ravel and Chopin. Herlong won third place in 2004 in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. She also was awarded the prize for best in Baroque performance. The next Van Cliburn competition will be in 2011. Herlong continues to study and perform, and teaches private piano lessons in her home.
