YORK -- A 78-year-old York man was found Tuesday beaten and gagged with his legs taped to a bedpost in his Fleetwood Drive home, police said.

Samuel Youngblood was taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill on Tuesday night, said Detective John Naylis of the York Police Department.

"He had a large contusion to his right eye," Naylis said. "He was struck in the chest, too."

Youngblood remained in fair condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Authorities don't know when the assault happened. Youngblood operates a liquor store that he closed early Monday.

"That's unusual for him," Naylis said.

The store was closed Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, Youngblood's daughter asked police to check on her father at his home, where they found him dressed in street clothes on a bedroom floor, Naylis said.

"Did somebody jump him as he was coming home Monday or as he was leaving for work on Tuesday?" Naylis said. "We don't know. We're still trying to establish a timeline."

Youngblood's wallet was missing, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call York Police at 684-4141 or CrimeStoppers of York County at 1-877-409-4321.
