The Lewisville Lions had an unlucky seven fumbles Friday, four of which were lost and led to four York touchdowns.
York, meanwhile, had one first first-half fumble, but that somehow also led to a touchdown for the Cougars. That's the beginner's recipe for a blowout.
York's Hunter Smith recovered a fumble by teammate Lee Wright and raced 54 yards for a touchdown with 3:35 left in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead, and the rout was on. The Cougars defeated the Lions 75-0 in Week 0 action.
York (1-0) built a 34-0 halftime lead behind a run-heavy spread offense in Bobby Carroll's debut with his alma mater. The Cougars finished with 330 rushing yards and 109 passing yards. Nine different York players touched the ball in the first half.
Wright atoned for the fumble with 191 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. Carroll credited offensive coordinator Jason McManus for the balance.
"Coach McManus coached D-I football at Troy, but he chose family over football to come here," Carroll said. "We run the ball out of a lot of two-back sets, and I'm just glad our offensive line played well."
Lewisville (0-1) fumbled four times in the first quarter, and the Cougars built a 14-0 lead behind the inside-outside rushing attack of Wright and C.J. Pendergrass. The tandem combined for 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter.
"The passing game was awesome at first," Wright said. "That opened up the run. I started feeling better and started scoring touchdowns."
York took a 21-0 lead on a three-yard score by Wright with 7:18 in the half, but the Lions threatened after a 71-yard kick return by Carlos McGraw. The drive stalled, however, after a sack by York's Shamal Sanders.
Smith's fortunate fumble return followed, and quarterback Spencer Carroll tacked on a 32-yard touchdown pass to Reggie McClain in a two-minute drill situation to end the half. Despite the missed extra point, the Cougars led 34-0 at intermission.
York matched that 34-point total in the third quarter. Wright sandwiched a pair of touchdown runs between a 55-yard punt return by Lamin Yanseneh and a 28-yard fumble return by Sanders. The Cougars took a 61-0 lead before putting in the reserves. Backup Tay McConnell added two touchdown runs for the final margin.
"These kids have been humbled, people have to understand that," Bobby Carroll said. "We told them in January, 'This is the plan. This is what we got to do.'"
Omar Talford led Lewisville with 23 carries for 70 yards.
