About 250 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division will begin to deploy to Iraq late this month to support the effort to turn back the militant group known as Islamic State or ISIS.
The soldiers are the first from the 82nd Airborne Division to deploy as part of what the Pentagon now calls Operation Inherent Resolve, said Sgt. First Class Joseph Armas, a division spokesman.
The paratroopers will relieve U.S. troops that are rotating out of the region, Armas said. They will “conduct security operations” during what’s expected to be a nine-month deployment.
A coalition of countries led by the United States has been carrying out air strikes against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The jihadist group poured into Iraq from Syria and now occupies portions of northern Iraq.
