CHARLOTTE - Charlotte City Council unanimously approved a rezoning request from Carolinas Health Care System for just more than 16 acres on the south side of N.C. 49 between Steele Creek Road and Wright's Ferry Road, allowing for the construction of a helicopter landing facility as part of a new healthcare facility set to open by summer. Carolinas Medical Center-Steele Creek will offer 24-hour emergency care as part of a 22,500-square foot medical complex. Observation beds and laboratory services join a host of other services available. "As our plans evolved into creating a 24-hour freestanding emergency department, we felt like it would be a good addition to the site," company spokesman Kevin McCarthy said recently of the helipad. "It made sense." A helicopter will not be stationed at the new facility, but a landing area will be available for transport between the new facility and the main CMC campus in Charlotte.
