LAKE WYLIE -- Sydney Marie Ziemer, 6 , of Tega Cay and kindergartner at Gold Hill Elementary School, set out March 29 for some crappie fishing with her father (me) and 4-year-old sister Emma Ray on Lake Wylie.
Sydney had to hand pick her own minnow, because she "knew what the big fish were looking for."
She was using an ultra light rod with 4-pound test line since we were out to get crappie.
After only a couple minutes of fishing, Sydney cried out "I think I have one and it feels like a monster."
Never miss a local story.
Her rod was bent in half and the line was running out on the drag. I looked casual, assuming it was a big old river catfish, so I said, "Just hang on and don't let go."
Just as I got the net under it, the fish fell off the straightened hook.
Sydney had landed the 4-pound, 17-inch largemouth bass with assistance only coming from the netter.
When the fish was safely in the boat, Sydney said, with her legs shaking, "That was cool!"
