A Fort Mill man allegedly staged an armed robbery and lied to police as a way to escape a rent payment, according to a Fort Mill Police report.
The report states Mark Jason Taylor, 39, of 103 Yorktowne St., reported an armed robbery to police around 1:45 p.m. Friday. He told police a man had grabbed him from behind and demanded money at the John Boy’s convenience store at 140 Spratt St. Police said Taylor told them a black man wearing a red T-shirt, blue jeans and a black do-rag took $1,500 in cash from his wallet and fled the scene, according to the report.
Police began their investigation and requested surveillance video from the store. The video showed Taylor arrive at the gas station, throw his own wallet on the ground and then run away from the location where he later told police the robbery occured, the report states.
The video showed no evidence of a robbery taking place, according to police.

When questioned about the video, Taylor allegedly admitted lying about the robbery. The report states he told police that he was unable to pay his rent and that he hoped faking a robbery would provide him with an excuse for missing the payment, the report states.
