Nick Leitten went undefeated his senior wrestling season for Fort Mill going 54-0 to claim the 2012-13 state championship at 145 pounds for Fort Mill.
Leitten became just the 13th wrestler to claim a state title for Fort Mill. Had he not spent his freshman year at Clover High School, Leitten would have been ranked second in career wins at Fort Mill High behind only Max Simons (2007-10). Even so, Leitten ranks fourth in career wins for the school and finished his career at Fort Mill with a 140 wins.
Leitten, who lost in the state finals in 2012, decided the next year to things a little differently after the semifinals: He went back to the team hotel to take a nap instead of sticking around the Anderson Civic Center waiting for the finals Saturday evening. Leitten said in 2013 that he came back feeling refreshed compared to the year before.
“Last year, we hung around the building and waited, but it was like a new start this year,” he said.
“Nick is a tough kid and works hard,” said Fort Mill coach Chris Brock. “He is a talented kid.”
Leitten scored a takedown in the first period to go up 2-0 in the championship match, but his opponent got an escape to get on the board and make it 2-1 heading into the second. Leitten added an escape of his own in the second period, and that was all the scoring that would occur in the match as he became the Yellow Jackets’ latest champion.
