ROCK HILL -- Mr. Avery Smith Adkins passed away at Piedmont Medical Center Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007.
A worship service honoring the life of Avery Adkins will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. with Drs. Shelton P. Sanford and Jack Basie officiating. Burial will be private.
Mr. Adkins was born April 12, 1917 in the Beth Shiloh Community of York County, S.C. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, participating in both the Normandy Invasion and The Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star. After returning home from the war, he was employed by Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Company for 43 years. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he worshipped faithfully and served as deacon, elder and elder emeritus. He was also a member of the Men's Bible Class.
Avery was an avid gardener and loved spending time outdoors and with his family. He also enjoyed pulling for the Clemson Tigers football team.
Mr. Adkins is survived by his wife of 65 years, Esther Adkins; his son, Ron Adkins and his wife, Bonnie; and two granddaughters, Shelby and Shannon.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill.
