ROCK HILL -- Mr. John William Newman, 97, died on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007. Born July 19, 1910, he was the son of the late Jacob Eugene and Willie Lelia Cross Newman and the widower of Idella May Sieben Newman. Mr. Newman attended Baylor University and was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served for 23 years including WWII and the Korean Conflict. He enlisted in 1932 and retired as Lt. Commander in 1955. He was a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators for 20 years and had 22 years of volunteer service at Wycliffe-JAARS Center in Waxhaw, N.C. He was also involved for six years at Bethel Bible Camp in Columbia, S.C.
Mr. Newman is survived by a son, John F. Newman and his wife, Bonnie of Newberg, Ore.; daughters, Carol Moore and her husband, James of Rock Hill and Susie Roth and her husband, Bill of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Steven Newman, Beth Newman, Dan Newman, Rosanne Moore Gridley, David Moore, Jonathan Moore and Ben Roth; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William E. Newman.
Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. today at the Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Donnie Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at JAARS Center, Townsend Building and at other times at the home in Rock Hill.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hermon Baptist Church, 9713 Lancaster Hwy., (Hwy. 200), Waxhaw, N.C.
