POUNDING MILL, Va. -- Opal Williams Brakefield, 76, of Pounding Mill, Va., passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, following a lengthy illness. Born June 23, 1931 in Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Robert and Lizzie Carroll Williams. She was raised in Sharon, S.C., but had made her home in Pounding Mill, Va. for most of her life. Opal was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Brakefield; one infant daughter, Janice Brakefield; and three sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by two sons, Johnnie Brakefield and wife, Brenda and Donald Brakefield and wife, Debra, all of Pounding Mill; one daughter, Joyce Sweet and husband, Danny of Pounding Mill; six grandchildren, Melissa Robinette and husband, Brian of Cedar Bluff, Heather Carr and husband, Daryl of Greensboro, N.C., Donna Carver and husband, Johnny of Doran, Danielle Clarkson and husband, Carey of Peterstown, W.Va., Jared Sweet of Pounding Mill and Cody Brakefield of Pounding Mill; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Hicks and husband, Tommy of Gastonia, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and two special great-grand dogs.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Carl Howell officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Harman, Jeff Harman, Cody Harman, Bill Aldridge and Ronnie Grove.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va.
