GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Mrs. Attelia Gilbert Spears, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Attelia Spears grew up in Bingham, S.C., and attended the Latta S.C. schools. She eventually settled down in Greenville, N.C., with her family in 1958. In Greenville, Mrs. Spears was employed with Belk Tyler Co. from 1958 through 1961. She was employed 21 years at East Carolina University Student Supply Store as manager of merchandise. Throughout her tenure at East Carolina, Mrs. Spears sincerely enjoyed her interaction with the students each and everyday. She will be remembered fondly by the many students she met during her 21 years. At her retirement, Mrs. Spears was honored for her long service and commitment to the university. For many years, she and her late husband, Ray McFarland Spears Sr., were active members of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. In October 2005, she moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. to be closer to her family. Mrs. Spears will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, devoted mother and doting grandmother. Her lasting legacy to her family and friends will be her deep Christian faith and her love of her community.
Surviving are her son, Ray McFarland Spears Jr. and wife, Marcia of Spartanburg, S.C.; daughter, Lynda Spears Mann and husband, Ben of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Debbie Spears Cox and husband, Eric of Weaverville, Andy Spears and wife, Wendy of Goldsboro, Meredith Spears Hinton and husband, Hank of Greenville, N.C., Rives Mann and wife, Tanis of Charleston, S.C., and Brad Mann and wife, Kimberly of Charleston, S.C.; six great- grandchildren.
