ROCK HILL -- Mr. William Oscar Starnes Sr. was born Feb. 1, 1933, a son of the late Frances and Fred Clinton Starnes in York County, S.C. He departed this life Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill.
Fondly called "Daddy Bill" by his children, Mr. Starnes was an Army veteran. He served during the Korean War. In his younger years, he did carpentry work. He worked for more than 40 years at Rock Hill Printing and Finishing, where he was a mechanic. He could fix anything and enjoyed taking apart broken appliances and old cars, patching them up and watching them run again. He worked part time at the former Phillips Pet Motel in Rock Hill and how he loved his dogs - from Joe to China.
Mr. Starnes was also a part -time landscaper and farmer. He loved riding his tractor from dawn until dusk, just like a cowboy riding his horse on the range. He liked to draw and read books and magazines. He was often a quiet man, but a man with a big heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to people in need.
Mr. Starnes was preceded in death by his brothers, John B. Starnes and Fred J. Starnes. Left to cherish fond memories are his wife, Margaret Blake Starnes of York, S.C.; his daughters, Francina Starnes Daniel (Ray Daniel) of Rural Hall, N.C.,., Mary A. Starnes (Jackie P. Foster) of York and Linda Faye Starnes, primary caregiver of the home; his sons, William Oscar Starnes Jr. (Pam Potts Starnes) of York, S.C., and Ernest Lee Starnes (Mary Tillman Starnes) of Newport, S.C.; a sister, Sadie L. Gist of Catawba, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Janice Blake of Rock Hill; a brother-in-law, Anthony Blake of Arlington, Va.; 12 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Never miss a local story.
The funeral will be noon today, July 10, 2008, at Clemons-McCray Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dariel Jackson will officiate. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.
