CHESTER -- Mrs. Virginia Alma Brakefield Thomas, 84, passed away Monday, September 1, 2008, at Chester Regional Nursing Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Philadelphia United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. John Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A native of York County, Mrs. Thomas was a daughter of the late Johnson Chass Brakefield and the late Sallie Hill Brakefield. She was a buyer for Tots n Teens and for the Belks Children's Department. She and her husband, Leroy, also ran motels in Daytona Beach, Fla., for several years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Catawba Chapter and of Philadelphia United Methodist Church in York. She was preceded in death by her brothers, J.C. Brakefield and Oscar Brakefield; her sisters, Annie Barker, Mary Taylor, Zula Ashe and Ruby Martin; her son-in-law, Ronnie E. Mitchell; and her grandson, Mike Mitchell.
Surviving are her husband, Leroy W. Thomas; two daughters, Linda T. Wolfe and her husband, Tommy, of Myrtle Beach and Becky Mitchell and her husband, Al, of Chester; six grandchildren, Brian Wolfe, Terrie Brookshire and her husband, Craig, Robert and Randy Mitchell, Robin Bishop and her husband, Perry, and Cathy Sherer and her husband, Will; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road in Rock Hill.
