GASTONIA, N.C. -- Mrs. Louise Stanton Adams, 96, of 216 Stagecoach Road and Courtland Terrace, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia.
Born Oct. 6, 1912, in York County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Minot Earl and Eliza Faries Stanton. She graduated from Clover High School and later attended Evans Business College. After retiring from Parkdale Mills, she worked as a cafeteria helper with Gaston County Schools and then with her brother and nephew at Stanton Dry Cleaners in Clover. A widow since 1959, she was self-reliant, possessed a strong work ethic and was an inspiration to all who knew her. For many years, she was a faithful member of Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church in Gastonia until her health failed and Bible study, prayer and faith in God were integral parts of her daily life.
Surviving are three daughters, Lois A. Matheson and husband, Ernest, of Gastonia, N.C., L. Jane Adams of Kingsport, Tenn., and Helen A. Levesque of Greenville, S.C.; son-in-law, Donald F. Johnston and daughter-in-law and caregiver, Patricia H. Adams, both of Gastonia, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth S. and Desmond Killian of Clover, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law, David G. and Evelyn N. Stanton of Clover, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses and 15 great-grandchildren, Cameron Johnston and Lynn Scism (Sarah and Joshua), Mitchell and Dawn Johnston (Lexie), Alesia Adams Mowczan (Joseph and Tess), Leslie Adams and David Wyatt Jr. (Baylor), George Stanton Adams II, Melody Matheson and Bobby Long (Callie), Kurt and Karin Matheson (Ethan, Megan, Ryan and Valerie), Amy Matheson and David Badger (Eliza), Patrick and Sheri Matheson (Marley and Macy), DeWayne and Angela Levesque (Elizabeth); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur W. Adams; daughter, Janet Adams Johnston; son, George Stanton Adams; siblings and spouses, Annie Johnson (Carl), Thomas Stanton (Helen W.), Mae Goley (Howard), M. E. Stanton Jr. (Evelyn S.), Martha Nell Wallace (Deaver), Lois Knight (Leroy), and Frank L. Stanton (Helen H.), and two sisters who died in early childhood, Fannie and Mace.

A celebration of the life of Mrs. Adams will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1425 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, with the Rev. Linda Kelly and the Rev. David Lookadoo officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Clover.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover and one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.
