FORT MILL -- Mr. Burnisky, 66, of Fort Mill and formerly of Mint Hill, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., March 1, 1942, to the late Stanley Sr. and Ann Burnisky. Gary played basketball for Clemson University under Press Maravich, the father of Pete Maravich. This team was the only one to reach the ACC finals until 2008. Gary was chosen most valuable player his senior year, and held the ACC free throw record until the 1980's. After graduating in 1965, Gary joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1965 to 1969. He played on the USAF basketball team. He enjoyed spending time on his front porch reading a book or newspaper and watching Clemson football or basketball. He loved his daughter's meatloaf and banana bread. He worked for Ronson Hydraulics in Charlotte and retired from Black & Decker in Fort Mill. Gary was also an active Mason and Shriner.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Lance Burnisky. He is survived by Eleanor Burnisky, his former wife and friend; his children, Brenda Lloyd and Thee of Latta, S.C., and George and Elizabeth Walker of Mint Hill; his grandchildren, Lawson Lloyd and Caleb Canipe. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley and his wife, Wanda and his sister, Cheryl Strait of Des Moines, Iowa.
A prayer service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road, Charlotte.
The family will gather with friends following the service until 4:30 p.m.
