ESPN's reporting the Panthers have signed DT Ed Johnson.
Makes sense, since we reported a week ago that they had visited with the former Colts run-stopper, who had a good year in 2007 for then-coordinator Ron Meeks.
He was suspended three times at Penn State for off-field issues, and released by the Colts in 2008 after a traffic stop resulted in a drug arrest. They re-signed him in 2009, but cut him for what they called performance-related issues.
Here, he'll go into an increasingly deep group at the position, along with restricted free agents Tank Tyler and Louis Leonard, along with holdover starter Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoatu, who's rehabbing his torn Achilles.
In fact, this isn't a good sign for Kemoeatu, who'd be due a $2.6 million base salary this year. The Panthers now have significant cover to either release him or ask him to take a pay cut.
