AUBURN, ALA. -- There were things other than Cam Newton going on here today.
But it was mostly Cam Newton.
The Auburn QB recovered from a so-so combine with a solid showing at his pro day, and he did it in front of the decision-makers.
Carolina coach Ron Rivera, Denver coach John Fox and executive vice president John Elway, Buffalo general manager Buddy Nix, Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis, Arizona’s Ken Whisenhunt and Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert were on hand, meaning the top six picks in April’s draft were represented.
They saw a 54-of-65 passing performance which was much cleaner than the 11-of-21 at the combine, with much more authority on his passes.
-- DT Nick Fairley was working out on the other end of the field as Newton prepared, and had a good day of his own. Probably not enough to get the Panthers interested at 1, but plenty of people were looking.
Be interesting to see how tomorrow's Alabama pro day will go, since Rivera and Fox (and likely more of the rest) will make the short drive to Tuscaloosa to see DT Marcell Dareus and others.
-- Speaking of future travel plans, Rivera said he was going to a load of pro days, but mentioned Alabama and Nebraska specifically.
The second one's interesting, in that Cornhuskers CB Prince Amukamara could be part of his group of "8-to-10" players he wanted to research.
LSU's Patrick Peterson is considered the top corner, but Rivera going to see Amukamara is a sign he might not be too far removed from that status.
-- Panthers QB coach Mike Shula wasn't here, but maybe it was just flashbacks.
The former Alabama quarterback and coach was up the road at Arkansas watching Ryan Mallett's workout. Shula was 0-4 as the Crimson Tide's coach against their cross-state rivals.
