Winthrop opened the adidas Invitational on Friday afternoon with a 6-3 win over UNC Wilmington putting an end to an eight-game losing streak.
The Lady Eagles decided after the win that it felt so good to snap the skid that they will give up losing softball games for Lent.
If only it were that easy. Later in the afternoon, the Eagles lost to Wright State, 2-1.
Winthrop, playing as the visiting team, broke a 2-all tie in the top of the seventh inning. Veronica Berrie hit her first career grand slam home run, a two-out shot off UNCW starting pitcher Amanda Aditays (0-5). The homer carried to the scoreboard in center field and, appropriately, caromed off the adidas sign.
Never miss a local story.
"I was ready for an inside pitch. That's what (Aditays) threw me earlier," Berrie said, describing her game-winning at-bat. "The first pitch was inside, and I kicked myself for missing it. The second one was right down the middle; and I got all of it."
Berrie took over the team lead in homers (2) and RBIs (8) in the game.
Chelsey Schoenfeldt started in the circle for Winthrop although she didn't factor in the decision. UNCW scored a run in the third inning by taking advantage of two Winthrop fielding errors.
The Seahawks tied the game in the fifth when Ashley Shingleton doubled and scored on Caitlin Cavarra's base hit. The next batter singled to chase Schoenfeldt.
Freshman left-hander Natalie Becker (3-6) came on in relief. She walked the first batter she faced to load the bases before retiring the side with a pair of strikeouts.
Becker gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. She allowed one hit and struck out three in two and two-thirds innings of work.
WRIGHT STATE 2, WINTHROP 1 -- Becker was not as fortunate in the second game as she took the loss in relief after walking home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Wright State leadoff hitter Louie Haney reached first on an infield single before being sacrificed to second. She reached third on a wild pitch. Becker then issued three straight walks to score Haney with what proved to be the winning run.
Winthrop's only run came in the first inning when Jenna Harbin scored from third on a RBI-single to right field by Taylor Wright. Harbin led off the inning with a double that took one hop off the left-centerfield fence.
