The No. 66-ranked women's tennis team started well, but could not close out the Virginia Tech Hokies, falling 4-3 Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The loss puts the Lady Eagles at 10-9 on the season, as the Hokies improve to 8-6.
The Lady Eagles found themselves up early as they captured the doubles point. In No. 3 doubles, Sara Abutovic and Julia Breuss took down Shannon Betts and Isel Martinez-Marcos 8-6. The deciding match came from No. 2 doubles as Giovanna Portioli and Sandra Herrera defeated Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher 8-6.
In singles action, the Lady Eagles could not come away with the three matches they needed to take the match. They were able to take two as Portioli knocked off Tea Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3 singles, as freshman Andressa Garcia defeated Shannon Betts 6-4, 7-6 in No. 4 singles. In two of the four matches the Lady Eagles fell in went into three sets as Yasmine Alkema lost to No. 1 singles to Yasmin Hamza 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 and Herrera lost to Martha Blakely 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.

The Lady Eagles will be back on the courts on March 19 as they travel to Huntington, W.Va., to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd. Those matches are set for 1 p.m.
