A registered sex offender who served time in prison for a child sex crime has been arrested after he allegedly propositioned middle school-aged girls at an apartment complex where he was living, according to police.
Vincent Edward Jeter II, 27, whose address is listed with the York County Sheriff's Office sex offender registry and on a police report as 2309 Eden Terrace, apartment 201, faces two counts each of soliciting a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, said Lt. Brent Allmon, a spokesman for the Rock Hill Police Department. Jeter is a registered sex offender, Allmon said, and bond was denied in a court hearing after Jeter's arrest Thursday on the pending charges.
Jeter remains in the York County Detention Center.
It is unclear when Jeter was released from prison after receiving an eight-year sentence for a 2002 conviction for criminal sexual conduct with a minor, or how long he had been living at the address, which is an apartment at the Mallard Pointe Apartments.
Never miss a local story.
The Mallard Pointe leasing office was closed late Saturday afternoon, and officials for the apartment and Powers Properties, the property management company, could not be reached late Saturday.
The police report from the incident, dated March 17, states that a middle school employee alerted the school resource officer because of concern over "some female students at her school." A suspicious man had made "inappropriate comments," according to several seventh- and eighth-grade girls at the school, so school officials alerted the Department of Social Services, according to the police report. DSS contacted police after it was found that Jeter was a registered sex offender, according to the report.
Police interviewed at least five children, and were told Jeter allegedly propositioned girls at the apartments, according to the report.
Sex offenders are required by courts to register an address and photos with the sheriff's office in the county in which they reside after release from prison. The registry, which is designed for the public to be able to track offenders and is available through the York County Sheriff's Office Web site, states that Jeter's address - the same Eden Terrace address - was last verified by police on Feb. 28.
W.J. Miller, a detective with the York County Sheriff's Office division which updates the sex offender registry, confirmed Saturday that the Vincent Edward Jeter II in custody at the county jail is the same Vincent Jeter deputies have registered as a sex offender. Offenders have to go to the sheriff's office at least once a year - and up to four times a year for the most serious offenders - to check in with law enforcement, Miller said.
