Rock Hill coach Eric Rollins said that the concept of "teamwork" is consistently preached to his players, and that was evident in a convincing 77-52 home victory over cross-town rival South Pointe on Friday night.
"We always tell them that just one or two players are not going to do it," Rollins said. "It is going to take everybody, and this was a complete team effort tonight."
The Bearcats posted five players in double figures, led by Jamel Jones and Jaylen Reid with 18 points each, and were dominant from the opening tip.
Rock Hill sprinted to a 23-8 first quarter lead.
South Pointe trailed 14-8 when Anthony Johnson soared for a slam dunk. However, the Bearcats responded with the final nine points of the quarter as Eduardo Mineri buried a jumper and 3-pointer, Jones netted a jumper and Deonte Fleming scored on the interior.
The Bearcats' dominance continued in the second half. Stallion guard Chris Frazier swished a 3-pointer, but Rock Hill went on a 17-1 spurt as Reid and Jones took charge with seven and six points, respectively, during that span.
With a commanding 42-17 halftime cushion, the Bearcats kept their feet on the pedal until finalizing the 25-point victory.
"South Pointe always is going to compete; there is no quit in them," Rollins said about the Stallions' effort. "That is why we told our guys that they have to want it just as bad as they did, and we had to go out there and play harder."
South Pointe coach Melvin Watson, who was still minus several players on the football team, said that the loss will eventually be a good experience for his young team.
"We are without several players, but we always preach that we will not make any excuses," Watson said. "This was tough and this was a great atmosphere," with the city rivalry.
"If we would have made a few of our shots early, things may have been different; however, we did not execute well and they did a good job taking us out of our sets."
Frazier and Tyreece Brice led the Stallions with 14 and 13, respectively.
