Throughout the season, Rock Hill coach Eric Rollins constantly preaches to his players to be ready at all times.
"You never know when there will be some type of illness or injury," Rollins said. "At any time, anyone can get hurt or sick, so I always tell the guys to be ready to step up."
The Bearcats took heed to those words on Tuesday as a balanced scoring attack made up for several key players suffering through illnesses and injuries.
Playing without leading scorer Jamel Jones, the Bearcats were still able to get quality minutes from key reserves to cruise to a 61-37 home victory over York.
Never miss a local story.
Rollins said that Jones did not attend Tuesday's game due to a virus.
"It is the same virus that Eduardo (Minuci) suffered from last week, and Jaylen (Reid) is playing through an ankle injury," said Rollins.
Manuci and Reid did play and contributed nine and eight points, respectively. Both players were crucial in giving the Bearcats a 27-17 lead at the half. Rock Hill then came out with a 19-7 third-quarter surge to seize complete control, 46-24, after three quarters.
That allowed Manuci and Reid to get plenty of rest in the final two quarters.
Forward Jaleel Scott and guard Roderick Howell combined for 17 points with nine and eight points respectively for the Bearcats.
York (3-6) did show several signs of promise, which included a 13-point fourth quarter.
"It is like we played two different halves," Cougars coach Ali Patton said. "We got so far behind early, but did get much better (in the final two quarters)."
Rollins said that while his team stepped up in the midst of injuries and illnesses, he is still searching for consistency.
"In the second quarter, we did not play as well defensively as we could," he said after watching his team improve to 12-1 overall. "We still have not put together four solid quarters.
"But we do not want to be peaking right now, especially with our region being one of the toughest in the state."
