From the outset Friday night in York, the South Pointe Stallions played with the focus and energy of a team with something to play for.
In the end, the Stallions came away with the Region 4-AAA championship with an 83-65 win over the Cougars.
The Stallions won outright after Fort Mill beat Nation Ford 72-57.
The Cougars were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
South Pointe's first-year coach Melvin Watson was pleased with the way his Stallions started the game.
"I just didn't want our guys to be tight," Watson said. "We knew we had a lot to play for."
A surprising loss Tuesday night to Chester at home setup the dramatic playoff scenario, but Watson was clearly proud of his team's resilience.
The game was never in doubt.
York was whistled for an early technical and South Pointe proceeded to blitz the Cougars with a 16-5 opening quarter. Manzey Miller and sophomore guard Tyreece Brice each contributed five points in the period.
Miller had eight more in the second quarter, and junior guard Cody Blake had 12 of his game-high 26 in the frame to stake the Stallions to a 44-23 halftime lead.
The margin grew to 26 in an eventful third quarter. York senior forward Reggie McClain was whistled for a hard foul after grabbing Isaiah Rodney and dragging him to the floor as he drove to the basket. The players jawed before being separated.
The result was McClain being whistled for two technicals and was ejected from the game.
Blake stepped up to hit all four of the ensuing free throws, which started a quarter-ending 8-0 run. Blake had nine in the period and sophomore guard Anthony Johnson pitched in eight.
Freshman Deshaun Andrews had six of his team-high 16 in the fourth as did sophomore Markel Castle, including two of his four 3-pointers.
