A Fort Mill man was killed in a work-related accident Tuesday evening, officials say.
Richard Broom, 59, was working at a facility at 398 York Southern Road in Fort Mill about 5 p.m. when he was struck by a forklift, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.
York County EMS treated Broom at the scene before he was taken to Piedmont Medical Center. He was prounounced dead about 6 p.m. in the ER, Gast said.
Tuesday was Broom’s 59th birthday.
York County Sheriff’s Office and a forensics unit were also called to investigate, she said.
Lesia Kudelka, communications director with the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, confirmed Wednesday morning OSHA is aware of the fatality.
“OSHA is in the process of evaluating it,” she said.
Broom was working as an independent contractor at the facility Tuesday, but he had done some work with Gator Construction & Remodeling in Fort Mill in the past.
The company was started in 2001 by one of his sons, Matt. Broom has two other sons, Alex and Jamie.
“He's a good man,” Matt Broom said Wednesday. “He loved his family. He was all about family.”
The family declined to comment further.
