The newly installed Cannon Heritage Cross hangs above the pulpit at India Hook United Methodist Church in Rock Hill.
Fashioned from a water oak planted in the early 1970s by Sherwood Cannon to shade the newly built sanctuary, the cross was constructed by Harold Wilson.
Cannon is the oldest living member of India Hook and rode on horseback during the Depression to check in with church members and keep the church thriving.
The tree, pictured below, had to be cut because of planned improvements to Twin Lakes Road. A special charge conference moved to honor Cannon by commissioning the cross. It's made from two beams 7-by-7 inches and is 9 1/2 feet tall and 6 1/2 feet wide. It weighs 400 pounds.
Never miss a local story.
The cross was dedicated on Palm Sunday.
