Compare Foods is closing its Rock Hill location on Cherry Road.
Store manager Angel Tejeda said the store “wasn’t doing well and the owners decided to shut it down.”
The announced closing date is March 31 but the store could close soon “if we sell out before that,” Tejeda said.
Compare Foods opened the Cherry Road store in 2007. It is the chain’s only South Carolina location. The chain has stores in five states including six locations in Charlotte.
Tejeda said the store employs about 30 people, all but five or six of them full time. It has not been determined if the employees can work at other Compare Foods stores in Charlotte, he said.
Store employees were told of the decision Tuesday. There is a sign on the door announcing the closing to customers.
Tejeda said the store offered a variety of national and international foods.
The closing comes at a time when the grocery business in Rock Hill is changing.
On March 26, Publix will open its first Rock Hill store at the former Super Bi-Lo on Cherry Road. Publix completely gutted the store. The company has plans for another Rock Hill Publix at the corner of Heckle Boulevard and Herlong Avenue. A third Publix store is planned for the Lake Wylie community. The company already has one store on Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill.
Walmart has city approval to build a “neighborhood” market on Cherry Road between Dorchester and Neal streets. It is one of several “neighborhood” markets the company wants to build in Rock Hill.
