NC manufacturer to get tax break to move to York Co.

A North Carolina chemical bulk storage manufacturer plans to move its operation to York County, where county leaders have initiated talks to reduce the company’s future tax burden.

A North Carolina chemical bulk storage manufacturer plans to move its operation to York County, where county leaders have initiated talks to reduce the company’s future tax burden.

Officials with Piedmont Energy Systems Inc. of Belmont, N.C., say the company will invest nearly $2.5 million and bring 40 jobs to the manufacturing facility. The York County Council on Monday authorized county economic development officials to begin negotiating an agreement that would provide tax incentives for Piedmont.

The company bought 47 acres of land on Campbell Road, near Hands Mill Highway. Tax records show the land sold for $285,000 in May.

Piedmont Energy Systems’ planned location is near the Penland Christmas Tree Farm, near Newport.

The company plans to spend nearly $1.65 million on a new manufacturing building and an additional $565,000 on equipment, according to documents submitted this month to York County officials.

Piedmont designs and assembles storage systems for industrial chemicals, fluids and lubricants, according to its website.

The company said 40 people will work at the York County plant, including 22 semi-skilled labor positions paying an average of $41,600. Other positions will have an average salary of $55,328. Six full-time management jobs at the facility will pay an average salary of $89,000.

It was not known Tuesday how many of those jobs would be new and how many would be filled by current employees.

Efforts to reach York County economic development and zoning officials and Piedmont Energy Systems officials were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

Piedmont is moving from Belmont, officials say in documents, to expand its operations. Construction on the new facility will be complete by 2016.

The proposed manufacturing site is already classified by York County as appropriate for industrial uses. Company officials say they bought the land this year with the expectation that water and sewer service to the site would be available sometime over the next four years.
