A 77-year-old York woman died this afternoon when the car she was riding in went off an Interstate 77 exit ramp and struck a tree, authorities said.
Around 1:45 p.m., Ruth Wilson was riding with her husband, Billy, when he apparently lost control of his four-door Chrysler as he tried to exit onto Anderson Road from the northbound side of the interstate, said Rock Hill police Lt. Jerry Waldrop.
Billy Wilson, 77, suffered chest pains just before the wreck, said York County Deputy Coroner Ev Amick. The couple was taken to Piedmont Medical Center and Ruth Wilson was alert and speaking to doctors when she arrived.
However, Ruth Wilson, of 5013 Billy Wilson Road, died in the emergency room, Amick said. Officials will know more about what caused her death after an autopsy tomorrow, he said. Billy Wilson remained conscious and alert at the hospital this afternoon.
No charges have been filed in the case, which police are still investigating.
