Winthrop’s Eagles, fresh off their Big South Conference TournamentChampionship, head to Norfolk, Va. on Saturday to play Old DominionUniversity in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Eagles, 15-3-3, are making their second NCAA appearance. They dropped a6-0 decision to North Carolina in 2002.
Old Dominion (13-5-1), which entered last week ranked No. 23 in the polls,dropped a 2-1 decision to Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic ConferenceTournament semifinals, but made the 48-team NCAA field as one of 26 at-largeentries.
Winthrop’s victory in the BSC Tournament gave the Eagles the league’sautomatic NCAA bid.
The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to play at North Carolina on Nov.15. The Tar Heels were the tournament’s No. 14 overall seed and received afirst-round bye.
