Winthrop’s Eagles, fresh off their Big South Conference Tournament Championship, head to Norfolk, Va. on Saturday to play Old Dominion University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Eagles, 15-3-3, are making their second NCAA appearance. They dropped a 6-0 decision to North Carolina in 2002.
Old Dominion (13-5-1), which entered last week ranked No. 23 in the polls, dropped a 2-1 decision to Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, but made the 48-team NCAA field as one of 26 at-large entries.
Winthrop’s victory in the BSC Tournament gave the Eagles the league’s automatic NCAA bid.
The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to play at North Carolina on Nov. 15. The Tar Heels were the tournament’s No. 14 overall seed and received a first-round bye.
