TEGA CAY -- Mayor Bob Runde announced a plan Friday that will allow Tega Cay to annex Gold Hill Elementary and Middle schools.
The announcement was the major news that came out of the annual State of the Community Breakfast organized by the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The city, the Fort Mill school district and Springland Inc. have worked out a deal that will allow the city to annex a small corridor across property the company owns at the corner of Dam Road and S.C. 160 West, Runde said.
That move would make the school property adjacent to the city and eligible for annexation.
Never miss a local story.
"This will be a benefit to the school district because schools have to have school resource officers," he said. "The schools in the city limits of Fort Mill pay the salaries for the officers but the schools outside of the city have to contract with the sheriff's office and they have to pay the salaries and for a car and all of the officer's equipment."
Runde said the district would only be paying the salaries of two Tega Cay officers after the annexation. The city also would have the benefit of two extra patrol officers during the summer months when school is out.
Tega Cay recently supplied the district with an annexation application form and Runde said the required public hearing and two public votes on the annexation request would happen in the coming months.
