A 39-year-old Rock Hill man was fatally shot Christmas Eve near downtown, police said.
The body of Clarence Odom of 2232 Highwood Road was discovered lying in the road in front of new condos at 114 W. Main St. Odom, the father of an adult son, celebrated a birthday on Dec. 11, according to his younger sister, Sonya Orr.
"We are in shock," Orr said Tuesday. "We just can't believe he's gone."
Odom died at Piedmont Medical Center from multiple gunshot wounds, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said. She declined to say specifically where Odom was shot, citing the pending investigation.
Never miss a local story.
An autopsy, including a toxicology test, is scheduled for this afternoon, she said.
Lt. Jerry Waldrop of the Rock Hill Police Department said no arrests have been made in the shooting. No details were available Tuesday about what led to the killing.
"It's always tragic for a family when there's a homicide," Waldrop said Christmas morning. "It's even more tragic and traumatic when it happens during the holiday season."
At 10 p.m. Christmas Eve, police were called to West Main Street, where Odom was found lying in the road, according to Waldrop and reports from the Rock Hill Police Department.
"He was still alive when police and EMS arrived," Waldrop said. Police believe Odom was shot near the 300 block of West Main Street and somehow made his way to the 100 block, Waldrop said.
Orr said her brother, who worked in the lawn care business, had a big heart.
"If I was in need of anything, he would go out of his way to get it for me," she said.
Odom's family struggled to understand why anyone would hurt him.
"Why would somebody want to do something like that?" said another sister, Tonja Biggers. "I just wonder why.
"I just want to see his smile," she added. "He would tilt his head to the side and just smile. It always made me feel good."
Odom is Rock Hill's third homicide victim of 2007, Waldrop said. On July 29, Amanda Rea Beaty, 26, was shot several times on the porch of her Cummings Street home.
About a month later, authorities responded to a double-shooting less three minutes from Beaty's home. The Aug. 26 shooting claimed the life of James Oneal Boulware, 19, and wounded the mother of his toddler-age child.
Police later arrested Kenward Roscoe in connection with Beaty's death, but no one has been arrested in the double-shooting.
