The worst drought to hit the area in 70 years was the runaway choice of heraldonline.com readers as the top local story of 2007.
More than half of respondents (54 percent) to our online poll chose the drought, which easily outdistanced the second place story, Winthrop's historic win over Notre Dame in the NCAA men's basketball tournament (27 percent). No other story received more than 6 percent of the votes cast.
The drought, considered the worst in 70 years, came on quickly in the Southeast. The summer saw a string of days with temperatures of 100 or above and 20 days in August with barely a trace of rain.
In a matter of months, Duke Energy had declared a Stage 3 drought for the entire Catawba River Basin. In most of York County, that meant lawn watering was limited to once a week. Stage 4 restrictions, which essentially would ban all outdoor and nonessential water use, could come in February.
"We can't keep up with how fast the water level is dropping on the 100-year-old (Lake Wylie)," CD Collins, a board member for the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, said in November. "It'll take more than one soaking rain or one flood to get out of this drought. I hope it never gets like this again."
The second-place story was the first Big Dance win for the Winthrop Eagles in seven tries. The 11th-seeded Eagles beat No. 6 seed Notre Dame, 74-64, in March in the first round of the Midwest Regional in Spokane, Wash.
"It's a great day to be an Eagle," said coach Gregg Marshall after watching his team build and blow a 20-point lead then finish the game with a 12-1 run in the final two minutes. Later in the year, Marshall left Winthrop to become head coach at Wichita State.
The rest of the poll results:
• Local area becomes presidential election hotbed with visits from most major candidates and former president (6 percent);
• Marshall leaves for head coaching job at Wichita State (4 percent);
• Other stories (7 percent).
