FORT MILL -- A Fort Mill teenager may have saved the lives of two of his neighbors Wednesday afternoon as a fire destroyed their home.
Firefighters from the Fort Mill and Flint Hill fire departments were dispatched at 4:38 p.m. to the fire at 109 Avery St. in the Paradise neighborhood, just minutes after neighbors woke homeowner Naomi Kaiser with the news that her house was on fire.
"I live down the street and was coming up to see a friend," said Vincent Brown, 13. "I ran into my dad and said, 'Look, that house is on fire!'"
The Browns knocked on Kaiser's door. She had laid down for a nap after the last of three children she watches during the day had been picked up. Her 16-year-old son was asleep on the couch.
Never miss a local story.
"At first, she thought we were joking," Brown said. "But my dad said, 'I wouldn't joke about something like that.' I'm just glad we saw it when we did."
"I don't know what happened," Kaiser said. "Thank God all the kids had left."
Kaiser and her son were unharmed. Brown and Kaiser said the fire started at the back of her wood frame house, but neither knows if it started inside or out. The fire was under investigation Wednesday night.
No injuries were reported, but authorities said the house was a total loss.
