Former Winthrop men's basketball standout Taj McCullough was named to the Washington Wizards' roster for the NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports. Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced the 12-man squad after the organization held a two-day mini-camp over the weekend.
The team opened play last night in Las Vegas, taking on Portland. Wednesday's game vs. Philadelphia at 8 p.m. will be shown on NBA TV and Comcast. Friday's game against Cleveland at 8 p.m. and Saturday's game against Houston at 8 p.m. will be on NBA TV only.
McCullough helped the Eagles to four Big South Conference championships. As a senior, he averaged 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds a game and also finished second on the team with 49 steals.
• CROSS COUNTRY -- Winthrop men's and women's coach Ben Paxton has announced the 2008 schedule.
Both teams compete at the same meets and will begin their season in Boone, N.C., for the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State on Aug. 29. The following weekend the team will head to Buies Creek, N.C., for the Campbell European XC Invitational. After a two-week break, Winthrop will host the Asics/Winthrop Invitational Sept. 20.
On Oct. 4, the Eagles head to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville XC Classic. Two weeks later, they host the Asics/Winthrop Fall Classic on Oct. 18 as their last preparation before the Big South Conference Championship on Nov. 1 in Lynchburg, Va.
The men will look to equal or better their third-place finish at the BSC championship, while the women will look to improve on their seventh-place finish.
All women's races are 5k and all men's races are 8k unless otherwise posted.
