FORT MILL -- Parents and students in Fort Mill be warned: Memorial Day will be a school day to make up for a snow day earlier this month.
The weather makeup day was approved by the Fort Mill school board last year. The calendar is available on the school district's Web site at www.fort-mill.k12.sc.us.
Fort Mill schools spokesman Bob Ormseth said the Memorial Day weather makeup day was approved by the school board last year.
Spring break unaffected
Never miss a local story.
That left spring break for planned vacations, school board member Diane Dasher said. "We've taken such heat about interrupting spring break plans, because people plan vacations and have to put deposits down months ahead," Dasher said.
In planning the district's annual school calendar, the board seeks advice from a diversified group, she said. "We go with the general consensus that suits most people."
Makeup days on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day or Good Friday were not an option, Dasher said, because they are not weather makeup days.
Fort Mill canceled classes Feb. 4 because of inclement weather. Students will attend classes on March 13 -- originally a teacher workday -- to make up for a weather day on Jan. 20.
In Rock Hill, students made up weather days on Feb. 13 and 16.
The state requires school districts to set aside three weather makeup days, but Fort Mill designated six, Ormseth said. A final weather makeup day is June 8, he said.
Dasher hopes teachers will use Memorial Day to help educate students on its importance.
"I am bothered by the fact that students have to go to school on Memorial Day because it's an important holiday," she said. "That's the day that- we remember the people who died in service to our country."
