Carowinds opens its 2014 season Saturday with two new water slides and a new dining hall set to open this summer, the first phase of a multi-year plan to improve the amusement park.
“There are a lot of exciting changes on the horizon,” said Bart Kinzel, Carowinds vice president and general manager. “From dining, to infrastructure, entertainment, and rides, in the coming years everything at Carowinds will see exciting improvements and updates.”
Saturday is the 15th anniversary of the roller coaster Afterburn. To mark the occasion, the first 1,500 riders on opening day will receive a commemorative lapel pin. Later this summer, Carowinds will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Nighthawk roller coaster with a special keepsake.
Two new water slides come to Carowinds this summer. Dorsal Fin Drop and Surfer’s Swell will be more than four stories high. The slides will add more than 600 feet of sliding fun to the Boomerang Bay water park.
Carowinds Xtreme Skyflyer has a new home, and a new name. Ripcord is now in the middle of the park and will send its riders plunging from 172 feet high across the midway.
Carowinds is building a new dining facility, Harmony Hall Marketplace, which is located in front of The Intimidator roller coaster.
The 500-seat dining facility will have an open food court design, offer a variety of dining options, and have live entertainment.
Other new restaurants in the park include Chickie’s and Pete’s, a sports-themed grill, Auntie Anne’s pretzels and an expanded Chick-fil-A.
Carowinds is introducing a new “All Day Dining Plan” for $29.99 so guests can dine in the park throughout the day at a number of the park’s restaurants.
