Upstate police chase reaches 100 mph

Speeding car races through two Upstate towns before crashing

– Police say a car being chased through two Upstate towns reached speeds more than 100 mph before crashing.

Investigators say an officer in Williamston checking on a disturbance at a business around 10 p.m. Friday saw a car speeding away on SC 20.

The officer started chasing the suspect, but turned off the blue lights because the pursuit was getting too dangerous.

West Pelzer Police Chief Mike Clardy said one of his officers clocked the suspect going 104 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Investigators say the chase ended when the driver ran off the road and the car went airborne. The suspect was taken to the hospital and his condition is not known.
