A young boy died Friday afternoon in an accident at a Fort Mill home in the Springfield neighborhood.
Luke Howard, 5, was hit with an aluminum baseball bat and went into cardiac arrest, according to a Fort Mill police report.
He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte on Friday night, but died from his injuries, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast and an official with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Medical Examiner’s Office.
After an autopsy was performed Sunday, Gast wouldn't announce a definitive cause of death pending the results of pathology and toxicology reports on the boy.
Fort Mill police responded to the scene, said Maj. Bryan Zachary, but determined the incident was an accident and that there was “no malicious intent.”
The family declined to comment and requested privacy during this difficult time.
