The name of the young boy who died in an accident at his Fort Mill home over the weekend has been released.
Luke Howard, 5, died Friday after reportedly being struck in the chest with a baseball bat at a home in the Springfield subdivision.
An autopsy was performed on Sunday, but York County Coroner Sabrina Gast wouldn’t announce a definitive cause of death pending the results of pathology and toxicology reports.
The young boy apparently went into cardiac arrest after he was accidentally struck by the bat, according to an incident report from Fort Mill police called to the scene.
Luke was transported to the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died from his injuries later Friday night.
Maj. Bryan Zachary with Fort Mill Police Department said officers were called to the home, but determined the child’s death was an accident and that there was “no malicious intent” involved in the incident. Gast also said the death is being handled as accidental.
When reached by The Herald over the weekend, the family declined to comment and requested privacy.
