Residents have come together to raise more than $15,000 on a GoFundMe page created to help Sgt. Anthony White of the Tega Cay Police Department.
White, 40, who has been with the department since 2008 and before that was with the York County Sheriff’s Office, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
“He’s a wonderful human being – the community loves him,” said Maj. David Nelson of the Tega Cay Police Department.
White is the father of three sons ages 9, 16 and 19, and was at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte from Jan. 27 to Feb. 9, Nelson said.
Never miss a local story.
The department created the funding page to help White’s family cover medical expenses, Nelson said.
“It’s our way of doing what we can to support Sgt. White and his family,” he said. “The last thing they need to worry about is financial issues. Any effort we can do to ease that burden, we’re going to do whatever we can. Our continued thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
Nelson said the positive response comes as no surprise.
“We live in a community that is very much a blessing to us,” he said. “We appreciate all the support he’s receiving.”
The goal is to raise $50,000.
