York County sheriff vows to protect Islamville Muslims after plot to attack similar N.Y. community

York County SC Sheriff Bruce Bryant said his officers will continue to protect the residents of Holy Islamville, a Muslim community near York, after a similar New York compound was threatened with destruction by a Tennessee man with SC ties. Local law enforcement has no problems with Islamville or its residents, Bryant said, and media reports and rumors claiming that Islamville is a training ground for terrorism are “plainly untrue.”

Sharon man riding cross-country and back for Tommy’s heart

Sharon resident Derek Blalock, 21, plans a 6,500-mile bike ride to the West Coast and back to raise money for a charity that provides free heart screenings for middle and high school students. Blalock, who left May 16 from Charleston, was inspired to do the ride after losing a friend at 17 to a sudden heart attack. He wants to raise $25,000 for a foundation created in his late friend’s name that provides the screenings.
