YORK -- York Comprehensive High girls soccer coach Elizabeth Roorda credits the Lady Cougars' success this season to sound team chemistry and senior leadership.
"Our players get along," Roorda said following last week's 5-2 conquest of Lancaster. "They come together as a team, which gives us a good flow on the playing field."
The YCHS girls had a smooth flow in the win over visiting Lancaster, with junior forward Samantha Schwartz scoring three goals to lead the charge.
Freshman Devin Puckett and sophomore Courtney Doster also scored for the Lady Cougars.
Never miss a local story.
"This is a good win for us in the region," observed Roorda. "We had better communication on the field tonight."
Roorda said senior leadership has contributed to the team's improved play.
Senior Captain Emma Hill said the win over Lancaster could be a turnaround game for the YCHS girls.
"We've come a long way this season," commented Hall. "This year is special for the seniors."
Said Hall, "We're excited knowing we can still qualify for the playoffs, which was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. I think we are peaking at the right time."
Hill said senior team members are role models to the younger players.
"We help them grow as players," she said. "Each senior has taken a player aside to talk to her about the team."
Fellow team captain Ruth Ann Hall said the seniors understand the responsibility of reaching out to the underclassmen.
"We want to do all we can to help the younger players," Hall said.
She, too, is excited about the team's playoff chances.
"Knowing we can still make the playoffs gives us the motivation to play hard," Hall said.
Roorda knows the Lady Cougars are still in the mix for a postseason berth.
"The region is strong this year," the YCHS coach said. "We have a lot of games left to play."
Roorda likes the team's camaraderie.
"They do so many things together," she said. "They eat together before the games. I love this group."
Citing the team's close-knit demeanor, Hill said, "I could talk to any of my teammates about something unrelated to soccer."
The next action for the Lady Cougars will be against rival Clover on Super Saturday at YCHS. Game time is 5 p.m. at Pratt Field.
"We're excited about playing Clover as part of Super Saturday," Hall said.
